A lack of faith in God and His word to change lives is at the heart of many problems in today's church. Piper hits the nail on the head with this one. Rom 1:16 - For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
C.S. Lewis makes a very helpful statement in Mere Christianity about the distinction between experience and doctrine (mountaintop experience vs. church).
He analogizes playing in the atlantic ocean with spiritual experience, and a map of the atlantic with doctrine. What you have when you play in the ocean may be very real and important, but without the map (which is the record of more experienced and wiser people who have been there before), you have no idea what is happening to you, or where you are.
You experience playing in ocean may be great, but without the map, you will never get to America...
